15-07-2009: GridSystems Participates in HealthGrid 2009 Conference

HealthGrid brings together an interdisciplinary community of computer scientists, physicians, bioinformatics and medical informatics experts, and other specialist in the field as well as security and policy makers, economists and futurists. The main focus of this conference is to enhance the biomedical research and healthcare delivery through the advances achieved by the application of grid technologies in the biomedical sector. The 7th international HealthGrid took place in Berlin, June 29th-July 1st 2009.

In this years' conference, Antonio Arbona, GridSystems' CTO, presented one of the demo sessions in which he introduced the @neurIST IT System (@neuSystem): Experiences using Grid Technologies in Clinical Applications.

The traditional infrastructures are unable to provide an IT-platform infrastructure that can properly support the system needed in the management and processing of the heterogeneous data associated with the diagnosis and treatment of cerebral aneurysm through the integration of complex and heterogeneous data sources and computing resources. To solve this situation, the aim of @neuSystem is to provide a new IT-infrastructure, based on Grid middleware, capable of meeting the computing and security requirements involved in the collection, integration, processing, and redistribution of heterogeneous data of extremely sensitive content through diverse and disperse computational resources.

As a practical means to achieve this end, @neuSystem is based on the interoperability, integration, and leveraging of the existing technologies, namely, GridSystems' grid middleware named Fura, NEC's Trust federation management and security credentials component called RSM (Relationship Manager), and University of Vienna's Vienna Grid Data Service Environment (VGDSE) for data access and data mediation services. The resulting integration now offers:

  • General computing services: image computing, modelling, and simulation
  • Search and query services: virtual medical record
  • Data transfer services: basic data transport
