GridSystems' CEO gives keynote at the INES General Assembly

INES (Spanish Technology Platform on Software and Services) seeks to improve the collaboration between private companies, universities, and technology centers while investigating, evaluating, and integrating future and emergent in order to increase the competitiveness of the TIC Spanish Industry and position it among the European leaders in software and services. GridSystems is a proud member of this community.

GridSystems' CEO, Joan Massó, was the invited keynote speaker in the 4th General Assembly, held last 8, 9 and 10 July in Málaga (Spain). During the sessions of the first day, dedicated to the "Future of Software and Services in Europe", Prof. Massó presented the opportunities and trends in the realms of Grid, Cloud Computing, and Software as a Service. His talk, "Stormy Weather", reviews the basic motivations, principles and key drivers behind the Cloud, lists the main players in the field, with special emphasis on how the Grid and Cloud actors are converging to create new and revolutionary opportunities for innovation and new businesses. The talk received an enthusiastic reaction form attendees who were keen on learning more about the cloudy shape of things to come and the road ahead. The talks of the conference are available at http://www.ines.org.es.

The main focus of this conference is to enhance the biomedical research and healthcare delivery through the advances achieved by the application of grid technologies in the biomedical sector. The 7th international HealthGrid took place in Berlin, June 29th-July 1st 2009.

In this years' conference, Antonio Arbona, GridSystems' CTO, presented one of the demo sessions in which he introduced the @neurIST IT System (@neuSystem): Experiences using Grid Technologies in Clinical Applications.

The traditional infrastructures are unable to provide an IT-platform infrastructure that can properly support the system needed in the management and processing of the heterogeneous data associated with the diagnosis and treatment of cerebral aneurysm through the integration of complex and heterogeneous data sources and computing resources. To solve this situation, the aim of @neuSystem is to provide a new IT-infrastructure, based on Grid middleware, capable of meeting the computing and security requirements involved in the collection, integration, processing, and redistribution of heterogeneous data of extremely sensitive content through diverse and disperse computational resources.

As a practical means to achieve this end, @neuSystem is based on the interoperability, integration, and leveraging of the existing technologies, namely, GridSystems' grid middleware named Fura, NEC's Trust federation management and security credentials component called RSM (Relationship Manager), and University of Vienna's Vienna Grid Data Service Environment (VGDSE) for data access and data mediation services. The resulting integration now offers:

General computing services: image computing, modelling, and simulation
Search and query services: virtual medical record
Data transfer services: basic data transport

BI is an in-depth business-data analysis.TravelCRM offers a platform that allows the secure integration of heterogeneous data from several independent travel agencies, but maintaining the current data ownership. TravelCRM, then, performs massive and secure processing of the pooled CRM data to generate valuable BI for the TAG managers who pass the learned lessons and other benefits to the agencies. This CRM BI solution, based on federated data is marketed following an affordable Software-as-a-Service model.

Small and medium sized travel agencies will be able to profit from the competitive advantage of BI reports, which will help managers decide, for instance, what or how to buy from wholesalers as well as run intelligent marketing campaigns, announcing offers in accordance with the expected upcoming behavior based on customer preferences, seasonal periods, or any other business cycles in the sector. TravelCRM offers optimized distributed and secure processing at an affordable price, requiring no investment in licensing, equipment, or the technical know-how.TravelCRM was reviewed positively by the Commission. It was selected as one of the pilots to use as a show-case by the rest of the project, and the solution was featured in an article of The 451 Group--TravelCRM: CRM, BI and traveling served on a grid plate. The Demo Design and Development team from BEinGrid has created modular demonstrator of the solution which includes a technical overview, the business case, a live-demo, and a video-demo.

Massó explained in basic terms grid technology and its evolution from high-performance computing processes in academic experiments to the benefits it can bring today in real production business environments, as well as the latest tendency to not owning the hardware or software needed but renting it from services running on a computing cloud.Massó described some of the GridSystems’ client profiles and research projects, while emphasizing the importance of the financial support from institutions when investigating the viability of new markets or perfecting a cutting-edge technology through European cooperative research projects and Spanish Cenit projects. Having been the first in Europe to create a grid middleware company and one of the first Spanish companies involved in European research projects has been a huge challenge. And even though the situation has improved, he still advocates for more support from local institutions: more R&D initiatives need to be funded and more SMEs involved to diversify the economy —and in this time of crisis, this is a crucial matter.[Original article in Spanish]

Funded in February of 2000, GridSystems is celebrating is 9th anniversary. We are very thrilled as this year we celebrate it with one more Fura in our family. It has not been an easy road, and many thought that establishing a software company from a small island in the Mediterranean sea was a crazy idea, but we are still here and going strong. We have grown and adapted as the technology has matured and the market evolved. We strongly believe in the quality of our product; we are very proud of ourselves as we know that our excellent team of researches and developers has made it possible. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, clients, the European Commission, and the CDTI --from the Science and Innovation Ministry of Spain-- for believing in us and making us participant in incredibly interesting and innovative projects. For those of you who have known us throughout the years, thank you, and we hope we will cooperate further. For those of you who just heard of us, we encourage you to join our community, and try our Fura project (open source), Fura Enterprise Edition trial, or Fura in the Cloud. From our office in beautiful Majorca, thanks! The entire GridSystems team
