Oil & Energy

Upstream Petroleum and Energy Industries needs for Grid computing are prompted by the continuously changing and large amounts of data to be analyzed, required for fast and accurate risk analysis and exploitation simulations to help decision making processes. The goal is to manage the reservoir assets, coming from geologic, seismic and reservoir analyses, in order to reduce the turnaround time of the results analysis.

GridSystems solutions provide the opportunity to integrate the data together with seismic, geological and risk analysis software applications and utilities. This also means that different asset teams are able to work together, deepening the insight of the full business process.

In order to offer services with the required quality of services and to reduce any kind of risk, Energy Industries carry out continuous risk analysis of their power network, which is a high-demanding computational process. Nuclear Risk Analysis (using Montecarlo simulations), for instance, and network management are very easy to integrate in a grid platform. Montecarlo simulations are clearly divisible into many small and independent parts. These applications immediately take all the benefits of grid technology, such as scalability and fault tolerance.

Also, Oil and Natural Gas industries which, for example, work on molecular dynamics commonly use in-house applications to perform their computations. Even in those cases, an InnerGrid platform with its API and bindings can achieve a seamless and straightforward integration.

  Example: EDF

We are helping EDF Energy in Paris with their R&D cluster management and grid projects. They have grid-enabled Nuclear Risk analysis processes using Monte Carlo techniques to simulate the statistical behavior of radiation and particles. It has also been important to virtualize their computing platforms by developing a new Grid Service to integrate the OpenPBS queue manager into grid environment.

The resulting grid platform includes OpenPBS-managed clusters accesed with Fura EE's graphical interface and optimized with the delivery services of Fura EE, so the result is a full virtualized platform with hundreds of Grid resources that can be exploited by the Grid transparently.
